Beatrice Maria Adelaide Marzia Vio<\/strong> (born 4 March 1997) is an Italian<\/a> wheelchair fencer<\/a>, 2014 and 2016 European champion, 2015 and 2017 World champion, and 2016 Paralympic champion in the foil B category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nVio\nwas born in Venice, the second of three siblings, and raised in\nMogliano\nVeneto<\/a>.[1]<\/sup>\nIn her childhood she pursued three passions, which she dubs “the\nthree S’s”: school (scuola<\/em>\nin Italian), fencing (scherma<\/em>),\nwhich she took up when she was five,[2]<\/sup>\nand scouting<\/a>\n(scoutismo<\/em>).[1]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nIn\nlate 2008 she contracted what was first thought to be a common\nflu<\/a>,\nbut turned out to be severe meningitis<\/a>.[3]<\/sup>\nNecrosis<\/a>\nled to the amputation of both her legs from the knee, and both her\narms from the forearms.[4]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nAfter\nmore than three months of intensive rehabilitation she was able to\ncome back to sport.[5]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nVio\nis a champion wheelchair\nfencer<\/a>.\nShe uses a special prosthetics<\/a>\nto hold her foil<\/a>,\nfencing from the shoulder.[6]<\/sup>\nUnder the coaching of Federica Berton and Alice Esposito she took\npart in her first wheelchair fencing competition in 2010.[7]<\/sup>\nHer experience inspired her parents to found the non-profit\norganization Art4sport Onlus, which promotes sport for amputee young\npeople.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nThe\n2012\nSummer Paralympics<\/a>\nwere too early in her career for her to take part, but she was chosen\na torchbearer for the opening ceremony after an online campaign where\nmore than 1,000 people emailed the International\nParalympic Committee<\/a>\nto support her candidacy.[3]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nIn\nthe same year, at the age of 15, she joined the Italian wheelchair\nfencing team. In 2013, she won her first World Cup in Montreal after\nshe defeated Olympic silver medallist Gy?ngyi\nDani<\/a>.\nFor this performance she was named paralympic athlete of the month by\nthe International Paralympic Committee.[8]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the early 2013-14 season, she paused to focus on her studies, but she returned in June and won both the individual and team competition at the European Championships.[9]<\/sup> At the end of the year, the Italian Paralympics Committee awarded her the distinction of ?Italian Paralympic Athlete of the Year?, a title shared with Oxana Corso<\/a>.[10]<\/sup> In 2015, she became world champion after she defeated Dani 15?4 in the final.[1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nShe\nwas named an ambassador for the Milan Expo\n2015<\/a>[12]<\/sup>\nand she published her autobiography, Mi\nhanno regalato un sogno<\/em>.[13]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 2015-16 season, she received the Mangiarotti Award from the Italian Olympic Committee<\/a>.[14]<\/sup> She won her second European title in Casale Monferrato, prevailing over Russian Irina Mishurova<\/a>.[15]<\/sup> In July she lost in the final of the Warsaw World Cup to Russian Viktoria Boykova, which ended her streak of 11 consecutive victories in World Cup events.[16]<\/sup> She however qualified to the 2016 Summer Paralympics<\/a> as the top-ranked fencer in her category.[17]<\/sup> In Rio she came out of the pool stage undefeated, winning her five pool bouts on 5?0. In the quarterfinals, she defeated Poland’s Marta Makowska<\/a> on 15?6, then overcame defending Paralympic champion, China’s Fang Yao<\/a>, on 15?1. In the final she met China’s Jingjing Zhou<\/a>. After she took an early lead, the bout was interrupted when the tip of her opponent’s foil went accidentally into her mask. After ice was applied, she went on to win 15?7, earning Paralympic gold.[18][2]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nShe\nreceived the America\nAward<\/em>\nof the Italy-USA\nFoundation<\/a>\nin 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
